A factory that produces an excellent product in one category isn't necessarily suitable for another.

Ideally, the manufacturer should have experience producing products using similar materials, processes and quality standards to yours.

Communication is an underrated part of supplier selection.

Pay attention to whether the supplier:

• Answers questions clearly

• Understands technical requirements

• Responds within reasonable timescales

• Identifies potential problems

• Provides requested documentation

• Is willing to clarify details rather than simply saying "yes"

Good communication before receiving an order is encouraging. Poor communication before you've paid is usually a warning sign.

Compare Samples Carefully

When evaluating samples, don't just look at whether the product looks attractive.

Check dimensions, materials, construction, functionality, finish, packaging and any safety or compliance requirements relevant to the product.

A manufacturer must be able to handle your order reliably.

A factory that's suitable for 1,000 units may not necessarily be capable of producing 100,000 units within the required timeframe.

Likewise, a very large manufacturer may have little interest in smaller orders.

Where appropriate, supplier information and manufacturing facilities should be checked.

For important or high-value orders, having someone physically visit or inspect a factory can provide information that can't be obtained through emails and photographs alone.
